While CBD has racked up plenty of nods as a potential stress and pain reliever for many of its users, there’s still a shadow of doubt cast about this all-natural compound. If you guessed that it has something to do with its relation to THC, then you’d be correct.

While hemp-derived CBD has been federally legal since 2018’s Agricultural Improvement Act (aka the Farm Bill), there have been certain gray areas about traveling between state and international lines with the product. Before you hop on a plane with your favorite CBD oil or salve, check our answers to these pressing questions about traveling with CBD.

Is CBD legal everywhere in the U.S.?

Yes. According to the 2018 Agricultural Improvement Act, CBD is legal across all 50 states on the conditions that is A) derived from the hemp plant, NOT marijuana (both are types of cannabis), and B) less than 0.3% THC (the psychotropic compound that gives cannabis plants like hemp or marijuana the ability to make users “high”) by dry weight.

That being said, it’s always a good idea to check in with your state and local laws, just to be safe.

Is it legal to travel with CBD on domestic flights?

This is the big question… and the answer is: YES! So long as the hemp-derived CBD product complies with TSA rules as of Jan. 2020 (i.e. it must be 0.3% THC or less on a dry weight basis and, of course, no liquids over 3.4oz), then it is okay to bring on the plane with you.

Is it okay to bring my CBD on international flights?

Eh… this is a very fuzzy area. In short, we’d advise against it. International laws pertaining to CBD are hazy at best, and each country and territory has its own legislation pertaining to hemp-derived CBD. You’d have to check in with the specific airline and the laws of the country you’re traveling to to know for sure if it’s okay.
